General Statement
Under supervision, performs skilled work in connection with the fabrication, erection, assembly, alteration and repair of articles constructed of sheet metal, including sheet metal pipes, flues, ducts, gutters, bins and other items constructed of sheet metal.

- Lays out work, cuts, shapes, bends, forms, punches or drills holes; assembles parts, bolts, rivets or fits units for erection; makes attachments, seams or joints by welding, riveting, soldering, bolting, nailing or other means of fastening.
- Operates machinery necessary in the fabrication, assembly and installation process.
- Conducts work in a safe manner and in accordance with established safety rules and practices.
Other Job Functions
- Is responsible for the custody and care of all hand or power tools of the trade in performing sheet metal work.
- Grinds or files rough surfaces and performs other bench and machine operations required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Environmental Conditions
May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of sheet metal work.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment of the trade.
- Ability to perform oxyacetylene and electric arc welding.
Requirements
Original Entrance - Examination
Duties: Under supervision, performs skilled work in connection with the fabrication, erection, assembly, alteration and repair of articles constructed of sheet metal, including sheet metal pipes, flues, ducts, gutters, bins and other items constructed of sheet metal.
Minimum Requirements: Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and completion of an approved apprentice training program in sheet metal work, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. SUBSTITUTION: Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Examination: The examination will consist of a written test weighted 40% and a performance test weighted 60%. The minimum passing score on each test will be 70% unless determined otherwise by the Director of Human Resources. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test to be eligible to compete in each subsequent test and to have their names placed on the eligible list.
The written test will assess candidates' knowledge, skill and ability in areas such as the principles and practices of the trade including the use of tools, machinery and equipment; reading and interpreting sketches, blueprints and plans; trade math and geometry; soldering and welding practices and techniques; safety principles and practices; and interpersonal communication.
The performance test will assess candidates' ability to demonstrate skill in performing sheet metal working tasks in areas such as those listed above.

WRITTEN TEST: The written test will be administered on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, 3857 W. 111th St., Chicago, IL 60655.
Candidates should report at 9:00 a.m. with the approved (printed) admission letter and driver's license or other form of photo identification. Calculators will be provided. The use of books, study guides, cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, laptops or other aids during the test is prohibited.
Original Entrance - Appointments
Appointments will be made from an eligible list with three categories: A (Exceptionally Well Qualified), B (Well Qualified) and C (Qualified). Candidates in the highest category will be given first consideration for appointment. The eligible list has a duration of three years. Appointment is subject to successfully passing a physical examination, a drug test, an evaluation of the candidate's ability to meet the specific physical demands of the job and a criminal history background investigation.
